Online Revenue for Freelancers / ZZPers in the Netherlands

Working through online platforms can open up many opportunities. Whether youre finding freelance gigs or selling products, there are some important rules to keep in mind. Lets dive into what you need to know!

What Are Online Platforms?

Online platforms connect suppliers and buyers. Think of apps or websites for taxis, food delivery, or cleaning services. Some platforms hire freelancers (ZZPers) for tasks, while others let you sell your products directly, known as dropshipping.

Key Points for Freelancers

1. Tax Obligations

Make sure you are recognized as an entrepreneur for income tax purposes. This might allow you to deduct certain costs from your taxable income.

2. Small Businesses Scheme (KOR)

If your annual turnover is under Euro 20,000, you might qualify for the KOR, which offers tax benefits.

3. Working Relationship

Ensure your relationship with the platform is clear to avoid false self-employment. If you are actually an employee, the platform must handle wage taxes and social security.

4. Assignment Agreement

You might be asked to sign an Overeenkomst van Opdracht, which outlines your tasks and earnings. Remember, this isnt an employment contract, so youll need your own insurance for unemployment or sickness.

5. Insurance

Check if the platforms liability insurance covers you. As a freelancer, you are not entitled to employee benefits like sickness or unemployment benefits. A new law is in the works to make occupational disability insurance mandatory for entrepreneurs.

Special Cases

  • Students or Minors: No earning limits, but you must register with KVK.
  • Dropshipping: You sell products online, but the supplier handles shipping. You are still responsible for the products and any damages.

Final Thoughts

Working through online platforms can be rewarding, but its crucial to understand your responsibilities and protections. Stay informed and make sure you are covered!
